Why your garden needs Native Thyme
Share

Native Thyme or Prostanthera Incisa is both a tasty Bush Tucker shrub and a stunning garden plant, especially in Spring, when it erupts into a gorgeous display of purple flowers making pollinators giddy! It can also be called Cut-leaf Mint Bush.
It grows up to 2- 4m and loves a bit of protection from hot winds in Summer. It can handle part shade too. We have ours in some shade and it is protected from strong winds and harsh frosts. It does well and can be a better shape with a yearly prune after flowering, something i need to do this year!!
It is edible with an earthy and rich flavour in its leaves with hints of mint and pepper, perfect for your cooking adventures. Great for a pathway shrub too, where it can release its beautiful scent when brushed against! It is a short lived plant though ( expect 3-5 years) so every few years take a cutting or start a new plant so you always have a plant to pick from.
The second part of its latin name means cut and it refers to the cut leaf edges of its foliage as shown below.
It definitely earns its place in your garden. Local garden centres and Bunnings normally have, it is part of the Bush Tucker range.
